@maddievision yeah I kinda want to do a bit more research on the media proxying stuff and whether it’s actually relevant on a personal instance

my gut wants to just rely on external URLs and have that be good enough for me, but my gut also says I could be missing a really important class of attack that I don’t understand…

@matchu like if it’s about increasing reliability then I don’t care, and if it’s about masking my IP and checking whether I’ve read something then I think I’m just not worried enough about that class of attack

but also like… is that naive?? I’m not sure yet

@matchu i tried mediaproxy via the web server cache module in pleroma/akkoma. it didn’t seem to make a huge difference in terms of perf and storage was negligible but also it exposed issues with souin and caddy for me, so hard to say if it was a loss or not.

@nsfmc mm yeah, the proxying feels lightweight enough to me in theory to make sense, if it were easy to set up, which it sounds like it’s not super reliable about…

@matchu it wasn’t unreliable, that was just the caddy module i was using, but also it didn’t seem to add much visible benefit for the number of people i follow/interact with so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (the setting did not survive the server migration)
