can someone explain to me why coverlets exist? why do americans feel the need to accessorize their blankets?

@scientiffic i thought they were a way to quickly coordinate a bedroom without having to find a whole comforter cover and matching set, but like this is a level of accessorizing and interior design i have not ascended to yet
