America, it’s time to realize that most of the world *cannot* relate to these neighborhoods. So maybe… stop depicting them? Especially not in a fictional world that’s supposed to take place in a galaxy far away 💀

Star Wars has always drawn inspiration from the real world to create its landscapes, including urban ones. But that’s not what it takes to make the material relatable.

It's also incredibly strange to just plaster some Star Wars props onto an American neighborhood and call it a day.

@nileane lots of places depicted in earlier movies were like northern italian and nearby... depicting american suburbs feels so off

@nileane Seems doubly weird because livable and farmable space is at a premium in the Star Wars universe, and here they are wasting space on useless lawns, single family homes, and driveways.

Literally the worst thing you can do for the environment and management of population density in that universe and ours.

@nileane wouldn't surprise me if budgetary pressures from higher ups made them find cheaper ways to make star-wars-ish content.

@nileane the trailer seems to evoke high budget, but I guess very little budget on multicultural public education research

@matoakit @nileane

It does manage to seem paradoxically alien compared to what we already know, though. :D

@DavidDarnes
Big film budget spent by people with a small travel budget.

@viticci @nileane I've never seen lawns surrounded by raised concrete curbs with lower driveways between them...

@jsnell @viticci @nileane Maybe a poor imitation of this type of construction, which is reasonably common around here. This is Google Street View about half a mile from my house.

@jsnell @viticci @nileane it’s almost as if the scene was rendered by an AI. It had no basis for turning the 2-D lawn images into 3-D.

@nileane feels more like a goonies/star wars isekai/mashup thing, i get the critique but also this is playing off a specific cultural vocab where suburban kids can see themselves in this kind of adventure. i would probably slot this in somewhere between peggy sue got married and flight of the navigator.
