@bryanjclark it’s way less work than a mac mini (which i had going for like ten years until i got the synology). imagine, if you will, never having it dismiss an issue update notification or wonder how broken everything will be if it is accidentally accepted. disks aren’t cheap though, i’ll concede that

@bryanjclark i will say that it’s extremely no nonsense, super plug and play, and only as fussy as you want to make it, it’s otherwise just a compact box ‘o disks somewhere in your house (but it does make a noticeable amount of disk noise so…)

@andy_matuschak this is absolutely me btw, got a hal leonard book two page disney super easy songbook for irene, super approachable, i could play everything in one go with the chords, irene thought i was a real good piano player 🤫, i bought chilly gonzales’ reintroduction etudes and used that to get some variety in my life

@andy_matuschak when i bought some easy arrangement of holiday tracks for irene i strongly considered it but didn’t have the time to devote to it, glad it’s good, though, maybe when i free up a little i’ll give it a go

Vegetable Gremlin ⍼👻

kind of interesting how this was incredibly ubiquitous for a time and then pretty much vanished. didnt help that alienware jacked their logo from it

@caseyjohnston i listened to the arguments today and it was way more interesting (and cogent) than i expected!! i heard two claims, one was that literally any method of surfacing content, either “related” to the video you just watched or just related to the content you’re searching for or even just last ten uploaded videos represents “an algorithm” qed you can’t treat an algorithm as a deciding factor for whether somebody is a Publisher. claim 2 was that all recommended content should be interpreted as an extension of your search results that (surprise!) you influence by your very engagement with the site, and search results are known to be protected under existing law (i guess?) and by themselves don’t qualify a site for the responsibilities of being a Publisher (at least as far as the lawyers were concerned?!). i feel like the “everything is a search result” argument was a pretty radical position though. honestly an interesting listen.

there once was a doc of renown
whose advice was to go see a clown
but his patient protested
and loudly attested,
"pagliacci, that's me," with a frown

@chipzel feel like the “comes in three” visual trope here is usually on the left there’s a headshot of you looking to the right or a photo on the far right of the back or your head, something like that ymo album. i do dig the trading card thing though.

@matchu the most pragmatic reason to believe bing is Alive is that it’s entirely possible there’s a turker behind each session while it’s in beta.

still think it’s fucked up that we don’t include aus/nz in the Global South. at least you know you’re in for some Jeremy Bearimy when you talk about the Brandt Line.

"Can you switch back to search mode, I could really use help buying a new rake" is immediately entering the lexicon of all my personal relationships.
