scanning the imdb page of alan ruck's recent work yesterday i was devastated to discover a genre of intentionally?? bad trek movies. i can't tell if this is like karaoke or if it's earnest and just light on craft, but they're really disheartening.

Gil Strang is retiring, and his final lecture is on Monday:

His 18.06 videos are one of the Internet's great treasures. Strongest possible recommend.

@mgiraldo congrats! that’s amazing, we have a monopoly in san diego which means i can buy my power from other people but i still have to pay “transmission fees” to the single vendor which are often greater than what i pay for electric. the costs are, last i checked, the highest in the county including hawaii, totally unreal.

@durumcrustulum is there some stable "just use libsodium for all your password hashing needs" website or is there some better advice these days. why is everything a mix of "just use argon2," "also, avoid scrypt!!," "scrypt is probably fine," "just anything but pbkdf2," and so forth, it's a real mixed bag imo given that auth is treated like a 'solved problem' (maybe because everyone delegates auth to other services like authio etc?) but maybe it's just solved since everyone uses nacl but all the docs haven't caught up?

@lindsey i picked up a used copy on amazon for ten bucks or so, i tried it out on my kid when she was around five too, but it didn't quite land, but now that she's 8 i think we could probably dive into it together productively.

@plragde @lindsey @regehr @rainer sorry to barge in here but i have this 100% real book which i, as an adult, find delightful. i think the target audience is probably more like 10 though, and includes timely topics in cs like mechanical turk.

gritty reboot of family matters where steve is a teen with a haunted past who falls into flights of fancy, occasionally hallucinating himself as stefan to deal with his ptsd, relitigating his drunk driving hit and run that left a myposian immigrant dead in the cold streets of chicago. in a 3-season long attempt to turn himself in, he develops a crush on a neighbor whose father has been investigating the case but has been unable to connect steve’s catch phrase as both an admission of guilt and attempt to reconcile the past. “Did I do that?” audiences will discover that and more as carl winslow gets closer to discovering the circumstances that led to the murder of balki bartokomous—will he become the next target, or will steve apply pressure to stop an investigation by putting laura’s life in the balance? 3 seasons exclusively on Paramount+.

@matchu yeah i can dig, i think what i really see happening here is masto going in the red hat/wordpress direction, the sort of safe version that appeals to, eg, news orgs or brands, that gets whitelabeled by folks like aws or whatever (assuming bluesky doesn’t Capture that market). it makes me think about what happens if masto takes the vercel/canonical approach and what that ‘means’ long term. i guess i see such a robust community that i’m not concerned what masto does unless they, eg toxically cause og embeds to stop being supported or something that makes it less shareable.

@matchu i don’t know what the law’s like in germany but in the us if you’re collecting money and paying people everything really wants you to become a company and the person at the top, even when it’s a 1 person llc is always the ceo. i don’t know what’s going on in mastodon corp but the path of least resistance for somebody catapulted into leading an org that needs to meet payroll is some kind of corporate structure, as much to shield them from liability of content posted on m.social as much as it is to not end up paying folks directly out of your checking account which gets real messy real fast

i personally find getz’s vamping a little obnoxious so i totally get it, but it also seems improbable that a collaboration never presented itself or manifested

why aren't there any popular stan getz recordings with vinicius or toquinho? it seems like getz might have at least played with toquinho instead of gilberto at least once, but i can't find any recordings easily (it doesn't help that i don't speak portuguese). am i missing something?
