seeing http://worrydream.com/July2023/ i’m struck by the idea that dynamicland as it exists is a project that is defined by its main steward and locale but not by a greater audience that might be capable of deploying it or even interacting with it. his reluctance to general adoption reminds me of the way that people carp about Major Players embrace/extend/extinguish strategy with open protocols at the same time that they try to advocate for retaining control of the protocol.

bret operates like an Artist but it’s hard to square the way he wraps it in the trappings of Academic Research, that is, he’s making his own thing, has a body of work, has a clear Direction and Process but is wholly uninterested in other people generally doing his thing. arguably most researchers are not super invested in ‘a working dialog’ with some random crank with a github account, but it’s, i think, telling, that nobody has been invested enough to try to reproduce the DL Magic™ and he seems uninterested in it becoming an actual general purpose environment, more than he’s interested in it being his own kind of Warhol Factory (or parc, yes, yes, i know).

in the sense that DL has felt unsatisfying, it’s probably largely to do with the tension between it being very obviously a working Studio centered around bret’s practice but attempting to operate like a research group.

@jeremyosborn that’s such a hilarious holdover from when both spotify and rdio (iirc) used queues as a way to classify streams on unpaid accounts as “radio” to opt in to a more favorable quasi-legal status

hilarious to speculate as to why my post settings on my phone have been set to “unlisted” for god knows how long, replying to random accts in the last two weeks and crickets

@bmp this was me using subtle/webcrypto last night realizing i “needed” to now write my own der/asn.1 parser because another spec (webauthn) requires wrapping signatures in der format for specific extremely common key types. (fwiw node’s crypto lib solves this out of the box but really disorienting and confounding when you get two verify functions disagreeing)

@jeremyosborn can you cut out some neutral density gels to tape over the light meter for indoor stuff to get it to overexpose a little indoors?

remain absolutely baffled at the number of people who get into cs who a) hate to read b) hate to write more than a few words at a time.

it's interesting to me that i've tried writing a lightweight TIL style blog post and failed a few times before just writing a gist that annotated some code i had written along the way. the gist isn't even that interesting, but it's interesting to me (all that matters tbh)

@durumcrustulum yo d, i finally got around to listening to the musk in the middle episode and like 2/3 the way through the audio gets totally messed up @tqbf 's channel got unmuted and shifted over so it was overlapped on a completely unrelated set of conversation (more than usual in any case :p)

@b0rk @ansate also made this one last fall and threw some puréed pumpkin and spices in, it was really forgiving (agree with others you could probably use some gluten free flour, i feel like the eggs did a lot of the work)

this sucks for the community, but the irony of an entity suffering an unexpected problem involving private insurers, medicare, medicaid, inability to find work during a pandemic resulting a collapse into financial ruin and actually wait it's a hospital and not a private individual is just a messed up system.

it’s weird to see people complaining about how usable or confounding swift macros make the language for beginners and like, did they all forget how confounding manual memory management and objc’s object lifecycle was for jr devs as well???? did they think everyone just “got” pointers??? nothing is intuitively obvious
