the story in birmingham (england) is so bananas, it's like one of those toppling domino memes where at the bottom is "only giving The Lads a bonus" and "25 libraries to be shuttered and refuse now collected fortnightly" at the top. it seems like it keeps getting worse, but i'd be shocked if other cities don't have the same problem as well??

i finally hopped over to threads after not looking at it since launch day and, just want to be clear, i don’t think these people are lying but there are a ton of posts that are engagement-bait stories like “am i the oooonly one that does…” or what i will lovingly call “tall tales”

i'll go as far as saying that these games are most successful when they interleave exploration and traditional story/battle mechanics, it's just fun to explore these places, but fighting one boss after another and not having a chance to take in the world, it feels like a rushed buffet. in contrast you have games like yakuza that invest so heavily in dialog at times that it feels more like interactive fiction than an arpg. hard to find that balance, but i feel like s/e mostly Gets it!

just a random thought but what current day square enix Gets about final fantasy 7 Remake/Rebirth etc is that the games are as much rpgs as they are theme park style immersive experiences for fans who spent so long staring at standard def matte paintings.

re: mr mrs smith spoilers, musings

on the one hand this is an interesting story choice, but it's also a striking disconnect between characters we see "get the job done," typically coldly and without sentimentality and how they're contrasted with characters we see doing 'the spy thing' and their (largely ineffective) vibes-based approach to missions.

when the camera spends time with jane, we see her doing what appears to be scheming, possibly undermining john—even the omniscient narrator is jealous or at the very least suspicious of her connection to Hihi.

mr mrs smith spoilers, musings

something weird about mr + mrs smith is that it’s clearly written from the perspective of john and subtly favors johns (in spite of their many flaws) over janes even though it’s ostensibly told from the perspective of the couple. of all the smiths we see die (or are implied to), it’s always the men that get shot/dispatched first and nearly all the johns we meet are defined by being, for lack of a better word, more silly and frivolous than their janes.

@jeremyosborn i think they're generally great (even if absurd), but i think they also need a bit more heuristic behavior behind them, i haven't experienced the snow case, but i have had similar situations in a parking lot where a car turns on in the spot in front of me and my car starts going wild. i always imagine somebody shouting "brace for impact!!" at least my dash ui has the courtesy to show where and how severe the danger is, but i wonder if i'm tuning it out more than i should.

the most ridiculous thing about getting a car with audible proximity/blind spot alerts is that some portion of my drive, usually while stopped at a light, i am subjected to a medley of klaxons that sound like they're coming from an x-wing flight sim letting me know that a tie interceptor is locking on

opened Microsoft Edge and there are a bunch of buttons on the right including one called "E-Tree" which I clicked and on clicking it it said "You've Got 10 Water Reward" and I have never been so direly confused about how I am supposed to react to something

one of the things i accept but don't honestly respect (i know, everyone's just hustling) is just how expensive and middling most farmers market/boutique granola is. folks will package up a cup and a half of granola in a cute kraft paper standup pouch and charge $15, it's pretty bold imo.

this eleven madison park granola recipe is solid and it's a pretty good value imo, it keeps in a restaurant quart container easily and accepts any dried or undried fruit you want, it's a solid base! anyhow, just wanted to share this, it's one of my go-to recipes

this recipe is solid (gift nyt link), been making it for years, the initial outlay if you have absolutely none of these things is around $90 depending on where you shop (i know i know, that's not cheap) but the food cost for the whole recipe is about $16 or about $2 dollar per serving. It's not a hard recipe and you can adapt it pretty easily (i usually double up the coconut chips).

@bryanjclark yeah, i forget what it was, but it was basically a map and list view on a collection of lat lon points/names you set and some notes, but i forget if it was more detailed, i couldn't remember if this was a Real App or just something i imagined. threadnote is awesome, totally in the vein of The Dream of Lotus Notes being alive for the iphone

@bryanjclark dude, was there some app you had recommended that let you make a semi-offline travel/trip guide for ios, like you could just throw a bunch of pins somewhere and some notes and you could refer to it easily without having to trawl through google searches or their bad custom maps on ios implementation
