@_rob @siracusa it’s hard to get good at photography in general but it’s a lot easier to get good at, eg, taking pictures of your friends laughing (or whatever you love). a lot of it is asking yourself (and being really critical about) what you want to accomplish and giving yourself the freedom to experiment enough to be able to identify what you vibe with. this is basically Developing A Practice™️ which is not really photography-specific but it is a very solid way to Git Gud that gives you lots of latitude to be loose in what you do day-to-day and still provides room for meaningful introspection and improvement.

this thought brought to you by me trying to find a specific non-elis+tom version of águas de março that appears to have been memory holed on the internet

a further thought here is how websites went from having “guestbooks” to “contact forms” to links to other social networks.

@bmp idea’s still around but you sorta need a large bloc to agree to it because the stratosphere is such a big place and localized changes can have unintended global consequences. needs more research and coordination. there was a tech review piece recently about a guy who tried a dinky experiment and he got shut down pretty hard later on because he didn’t actually get any govt buy-in https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/12/24/1066041/a-startup-says-its-begun-releasing-particles-into-the-atmosphere-in-an-effort-to-tweak-the-climate/

a follow on thought to this is that it remains criminal that apple abandoned the itunesLP format, which was basically tailor made for "lowkey mixtape using html and a dash of javascript"

seeing http://worrydream.com/July2023/ i’m struck by the idea that dynamicland as it exists is a project that is defined by its main steward and locale but not by a greater audience that might be capable of deploying it or even interacting with it. his reluctance to general adoption reminds me of the way that people carp about Major Players embrace/extend/extinguish strategy with open protocols at the same time that they try to advocate for retaining control of the protocol.

bret operates like an Artist but it’s hard to square the way he wraps it in the trappings of Academic Research, that is, he’s making his own thing, has a body of work, has a clear Direction and Process but is wholly uninterested in other people generally doing his thing. arguably most researchers are not super invested in ‘a working dialog’ with some random crank with a github account, but it’s, i think, telling, that nobody has been invested enough to try to reproduce the DL Magic™ and he seems uninterested in it becoming an actual general purpose environment, more than he’s interested in it being his own kind of Warhol Factory (or parc, yes, yes, i know).

in the sense that DL has felt unsatisfying, it’s probably largely to do with the tension between it being very obviously a working Studio centered around bret’s practice but attempting to operate like a research group.

@jeremyosborn that’s such a hilarious holdover from when both spotify and rdio (iirc) used queues as a way to classify streams on unpaid accounts as “radio” to opt in to a more favorable quasi-legal status
