the answer is that you can do this in a reasonable timeframe if you don't ask your extremely tired primary db/server cluster to do this massive data ingestion and processing work and can then gradually fold normalized data back into your cluster in a bunch of more trivial operations, but i still think that "is this on par with what i'd expect to see on a Pentium data sheet" can reveal unexplored perf or platform arch issues.

i don't usually talk about tech gripes, but i think occasionally about the time somebody told me a few years ago it would take upwards of five hours for a job to process a million database entities and i responded, without thinking, "on what, a pentium?"

did enough with electron to sour on it (good) but also i appreciate that i have a reference implementation that is quite easy to iterate on that i can use to validate my swiftui implementation (surprisingly less troublesome than i expected)

everything i’ve read/heard about rebirth makes me think that this sort of theme park experience is extremely central to the way rebirth is structured and designed: everything after midgar in the original was always a bunch of more vignette like experiences, slice of life moments that are sort of structured and directed but mostly feel like moments to sample and occasionally give yourself to for a little while and my read is that is like 100% what a theme park is and why Videogames like Yakuza are as much About a Place as they are about their characters.

@pamelafox pamela i just went through all of this (still going through it tbh). if the panel is fine you likely don’t need to upgrade but it’s possible that your neighbor was suggesting that a 110 plug (regular outlet) wouldn’t be suitable for fast L2 charging and that you’d want something like a dryer outlet either at 24/36/48A. if you have short like <20mi/day commutes you can absolutely get by on a 110 plug charging overnight. you would only need to upgrade your panel if it’s actually a dangerous model or if you’ve reached capacity (ie you can’t add anymore breakers). we also had an interior sub panel in a closet that nobody would touch because of code, but everyone just pretends it doesn’t exist because the main is outside. our main panel upgrade cost like $6k iirc and it mostly got us the ability to put a large sub panel in our garage for solar etc. i like our ioniq 5 but i considered the ioniq6 also, its smaller and more sedan like and honestly would have worked just as fine for our purposes, lots of good options nowadays, happy to chat more if you have any other qs.

@gedeonm yeah, similar wfh deal here. in practice i’ve been ok with the number of chargers out in the wild (which have increased _a lot_ since i got it), but i think i would be less stoked on the car during this “commute era” if i had to spend more than 30 mins charging to get back to 80/90%. like i said, big fan of the ioniq5, in this specific “months of commuting” scenario im mostly glad i didn’t get a slower charging car like the id4 i briefly considered (im sure its a great car but seeing it plugged into a 350 charger makes me die a little each time). glad to add color to any decision you make!

@gedeonm you’ve gotten a ton of responses but i’ll add: i thought fast charging was a sales gimmick after i bought mine last april because 150kw chargers were rare in san diego and 350kw nonexistent and also i charged at home for the first three months and could get by on 110. when i had to move and had a significantly larger commute(50-100mi/day depending) i ended up seeking out every 350kw charger because after a long day the ~20min 12-80% charge was nice and i appreciated being able to peace out quickly and get back home. if you can L2 charge at home it doesn’t really make a difference but if you’re using electrify america or whatever and there’s a wait, it’s nice to not spend more time there than you need. oh also, the michelin tires that came with mine had this noise insulating foam that detached at 12k miles causing the wheel to wobble unsettlingly and various speeds. it can be removed but it really is a weird failure. beyond that i love the car, just wanted to share

the story in birmingham (england) is so bananas, it's like one of those toppling domino memes where at the bottom is "only giving The Lads a bonus" and "25 libraries to be shuttered and refuse now collected fortnightly" at the top. it seems like it keeps getting worse, but i'd be shocked if other cities don't have the same problem as well??

i finally hopped over to threads after not looking at it since launch day and, just want to be clear, i don’t think these people are lying but there are a ton of posts that are engagement-bait stories like “am i the oooonly one that does…” or what i will lovingly call “tall tales”

i'll go as far as saying that these games are most successful when they interleave exploration and traditional story/battle mechanics, it's just fun to explore these places, but fighting one boss after another and not having a chance to take in the world, it feels like a rushed buffet. in contrast you have games like yakuza that invest so heavily in dialog at times that it feels more like interactive fiction than an arpg. hard to find that balance, but i feel like s/e mostly Gets it!

just a random thought but what current day square enix Gets about final fantasy 7 Remake/Rebirth etc is that the games are as much rpgs as they are theme park style immersive experiences for fans who spent so long staring at standard def matte paintings.

on the one hand this is an interesting story choice, but it's also a striking disconnect between characters we see "get the job done," typically coldly and without sentimentality and how they're contrasted with characters we see doing 'the spy thing' and their (largely ineffective) vibes-based approach to missions.

when the camera spends time with jane, we see her doing what appears to be scheming, possibly undermining john—even the omniscient narrator is jealous or at the very least suspicious of her connection to Hihi.
